Border Crossing

You'll need to pass through border control at both the Romanian and Bulgarian sides. Have your passport or ID card ready. During busy periods (holidays, weekends), expect longer waiting times.

Bridge Toll

The Danube Bridge has a toll fee of approximately €6 for cars. Payment can be made in Romanian Lei, Bulgarian Lev, or Euro.

Bulgarian Vignette

You'll need to purchase a vignette (road tax) for driving in Bulgaria. These can be bought at the border, gas stations, or online. A weekend vignette costs around 10 BGN (€5).

Parking in Ruse

Ruse has both paid and free parking zones. The city center primarily has paid parking (Blue Zone), while areas further from the center offer free parking.

  • Rate: 1 BGN (€0.50) per hour
  • Payment: Via SMS, mobile app, or parking meters
  • Maximum stay: Usually 3 hours in central areas

Free Parking Areas

Free parking is available in residential areas and some designated lots outside the city center. Notable free parking areas include:

  • Danube Park area (10-minute walk to center)
  • Near the Railway Station
  • Borovo area (15-minute walk to center)
Currency & Payments

Local Currency

The official currency in Bulgaria is the Bulgarian Lev (BGN). The exchange rate is fixed at approximately 1.96 BGN to 1 EUR.

Currency Exchange

Exchange offices are available at the border, in the city center, and at banks. Avoid exchanging at the border if possible, as rates are typically less favorable.

Card Payments

Credit and debit cards are widely accepted in Ruse, especially Visa and Mastercard. However, it's advisable to carry some cash for smaller establishments, street markets, and taxis.

ATMs

ATMs are readily available throughout Ruse. Most offer instructions in multiple languages, including English and Romanian.

Best Time to Visit

Spring (April-May)

Mild temperatures and blooming gardens make this an excellent time to visit. The city's parks are particularly beautiful, and outdoor cafes begin to open.

Summer (June-August)

Hot weather with temperatures often exceeding 30°C. This is the peak tourist season with numerous festivals and events. The Danube promenade is lively with outdoor activities.

Autumn (September-October)

Pleasant temperatures and fewer tourists. The city's parks display beautiful fall colors, and cultural events continue indoors.

Winter (November-March)

Cold temperatures with occasional snow. Christmas markets and decorations create a festive atmosphere. Indoor attractions like museums and theaters are less crowded.

Local Transportation in Ruse

Public Buses

Ruse has a network of public buses covering most areas of the city. Tickets cost 1 BGN (€0.50) and can be purchased from the driver or at kiosks. Buses typically run from 5:30 AM to 11:00 PM.

Taxis

Taxis are affordable and readily available. Look for licensed taxis with a meter. The starting fee is around 1 BGN (€0.50) with approximately 0.80 BGN (€0.40) per kilometer. Most taxis accept cash only.

Walking

Ruse's city center is compact and pedestrian-friendly. Most major attractions are within walking distance of each other, making walking the most convenient way to explore the central area.

Bicycle Rental

Several shops offer bicycle rentals, which is a great way to explore the city and the scenic Danube riverside. Rates typically range from 10-20 BGN (€5-10) per day.
